CII awards 12 Corporate as "Excellent Energy Efficient units"

CII gave away the "National Awards for Excellence in Energy Management" during the Award seminar organised at Chennai from 2 - 3 December 2002.


The awards were distributed by Mr Nainar Nagenthran, Honorable Minster for Electricity & Industries, Govt of Tamilnadu during the Award Presentation Function.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nainar Nagenthran congratulated CII for institutionalizing the award. He said Tamil Nadu has come a long way in having an installed generating capacity of 7905 MW vis-à-vis 156 MW at the time of independence. He added that the government and TNEB are taking up sustained efforts to improve the power availability in the state.




Mr K Gnanadesikan, IAS, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in his address said that TNEB has a vested interest in encouraging energy conservation in the state.

He said a saving of 10% energy by the industrial sector would amount to a saving of 1200 million units per year for the state. He added that TNEB would continue to work with CII on the energy conservation activities.

during his address highlighted several initiatives of CII (SR). He said that CII recently submitted suggestions to TNERC not to go ahead with the proposed hike in power tariff. He added that TNEB should initiate cost reduction, so as to offer power at a competitive price to the industry.



Mr K Vasudevan, Chairman, Energy Summit 2002 and Director, Alstom Power India Limited said that the award for energy excellence is now an institutionalized event of CII and this year more than 100 corporate competed for the award. The objective of the award is to instill a sense of competition amongst the companies and facilitate sharing of knowledge across different sectors.

Mr Vasudevan added that CII recently made a presentation to the Planning Commission on power sector reforms in Tamil Nadu. The Planning Commission is setting up a task force including Govt and Industrial representatives on power sector reforms, which he said is a welcome step.



26 companies were selected by an eminent panel of Judges to make presentations on energy conservation measures adopted in their respective units. The award committee was headed by Mr G Jayaraman, Member, Energy & Power Sub-Committee, CII (SR) & Senior Consultant, ERCOM Consulting Engineers.

Twelve units have been awarded as "Excellent Energy Efficient units". The units in alphabetical order are:
  • Coromandel Fertilisers Limited, Vizag

  • Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited, Dalmiapuram

  • Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd, Mumbai

  • Hero Cycles Limited (CR Division), Ludhiana

  • Hindalco, Renukoot

  • ITC Ltd - Bhadrachalam Paper Boards Division

  • Madras Cements Limited, Alathiyur

  • MALCO - Captive Power Plant, Mettur Dam

  • Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Limited, Alathur

  • Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited, Toansa

  • Reliance Industries Limited, Hazira

  • TATA Engineering (PCBU), Chikhali

"Most Useful Presentation Award" was given to three companies viz., Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co, Mumbai; Reliance Industries Ltd, Hazira & Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd, Tuticorin.
